As the 40th annual commemoration (March 28, 1979 to March 28, 2019) of the Three Mile Island (TMI) Unit 2 atomic reactor meltdown approaches, Beyond Nuclear and Three Mile Island Alert will hold a press conference and press information session regarding urgent nuclear power and radioactive waste issues affecting the Harrisburg area, and beyond in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Speakers will include:

Eric Epstein, TMIA Chairman, will moderate the press conference.

A short informational animation, prepared by Scott Portzline, Security Consultant, TMIA, about radioactive waste transport risks in PA, will be shown. A 90-second aerial drone-captured video, featuring transport routes from the Peach Bottom and TMI nuclear power plants, will also be premiered.

Kevin Kamps, Radioactive Waste Specialist, Beyond Nuclear, addressing the safety and security risks of transporting highly radioactive irradiated nuclear fuel on the roads and rails, as proposed in legislation currently before the U.S. Congress. He will also discuss the risks of irradiated nuclear fuel indoor wet storage pool fires for the entire region.

A short informational video, “Nuclear Transports – Eye-Witness to Rulebreaking,” prepared by Scott Portzline, Security Consultant, TMIA, will be shown.

Paul Gunter, Reactor Oversight Project Director, Beyond Nuclear, will address the risks of 80 years of extended operations at Peach Bottom Units 2 & 3, Fukushima Daiichi twin design reactors (General Electric Mark I Boiling Water Reactors), and the urgency of applying lessons learned from “nuclear autopsies” at permanently closed reactors like Oyster Creek, New Jersey in such license extension decisions.

When: Press conference and press information session from 1 to 2pm, Tuesday, October 2, 2018 (preceding that, a first come/first served lunch will be served in Room #39, East Wing, Main Capitol Building, from 12 noon to 1pm)
