“Folk Musician celebrates 40 years on the road”
Traditional American folk and Northeast Pa Coal Mine enthusiast Jay Smar, will celebrate 40 years as a full time musician this May.
Smar started his professional career in 1976 when he went on tour with a national touring band called “The Classics Four” which had million selling hits such as “Spooky Little Girl Like You” , “Stormy”, “Traces” and “Everyday With You”.
Although the band was not all original members, band conductor and manager Gabe Garland of Hazleton, Pa., bought 1970 bands such as The Lovin Spoonful, The McCoys, The Toys, and a few other notables of that era, and hired competent musicians to fill the shoes of the original members.
While touring Canada and most of the U.S., Smar’s interest in “bluegrass” blossomed and he started performing and listening to more more and traditional music.
Smar now offers programs with coal mining songs of Northeast Pennsylvania as well as original and traditional American folk music.
He was recognized by the Pa House of Representatives for preserving coal mine history, toured Scotland, and is on the roster for the Pa Performing Arts on Tour and also the Pa Humanities Council.
